Under en tågutflykt med familj och vänner i Berlin hände några spännande slumpartade (?) möten som jag blev mycket berörd av. Det började under en promenad i solskenet. Vi hade precis ätit lite lunch vid Hackescher Markt varifrån vi skulle promenera bort till en julmarknad mitt emot Humboldt-universitetet. När vi kommer fram till Spree vänder jag mig snabbt om, bort från solskenet som smekte huden. Jag hade noterat något i ögonvrån. Det var något jag kände igen. Men det kan väl inte vara, jo det kan det. Det var ju de underbara skyltarna River Sisters hade gjort i Venedig.
Det var inte skyltarna med Vättern och Viskan – dom har vi hemma i Sverige – utan Oder och Spree som stod där och glänste. Det var en magisk känsla, helt fantastisk faktiskt. Jag var ju bara här en sväng några dagar och inte alls i jobbet – men Naturens rättigheter verkar vara en magnet som drar åt sig min kropp med obändig kraft.
Odra kommer på oväntat besök
Jag kliver in genom dörren på Polnisches Institut Berlin för att ta del av den fritt tillgängliga utställningen och ser kjolarna som sammanfattar Odras svämplan hängande i taket. Jag rör mig runt i utställningen och kastas tillbaka till våra möten i Venedig vilka skapade fantastiska relationer. Jag minns när vi pratade om ekofeminism och när vi pratade om att organisera en rörelse. Naturens rättigheter vibrerade återigen i min kropp och liksom letade efter tecken på mer av detta i Berlin.
Transdisciplinär vattenforskning med Naturens rättigheter som framtidsvision
Efter att jag lite chockad och tagen kom ut från lokalen följde vi den lågt hängande solens strålar längs den inmurade floden Spree, till en julmarknad. Den låg framför en nybyggd återskapad byggnad som nu innehåller något som heter Humbolt Forum. Jag bestämde mig för att kolla in vad denna pampiga byggnad hade för utställningar. Då visade sig Naturens rättigheter för mig i ännu en Berlinsk form – helt oväntat och helt överväldigande.
Utställningen On Water hade allt från den mikroskopiska naturvetenskapliga förståelsen av vattenföroreningar till hur olika växter kan leva tillsammans med olika typer av vatten, till nedlagda kolgruvor i Lusatia. Kolgruvornas gifter flödar till Berlin; det är därifrån dricksvattnet kommer. Allt ifrån det, till de stora berättelserna om vattencykeln och om hur vi verkligen kan förstå avrinningsområden som kapillärer i en kropp som blir större och större ju längre dom finns tillsammans mot centrum.
Eller som det uttrycks i beskrivningen av utställningen:
”Detta gör det möjligt att uppleva mångfalden och komplexiteten i vattenkunskap i Berlin. Men inte bara begränsat till detta: utställningen presenterar även utvalda forskningsprojekt som behandlar lösningar på vattenbrist i Egypten och Kurdistan, med hänsyn till lokal kunskap. Dessutom visas ett juridiskt initiativ som behandlar frågan om hur Spree skulle kunna erkännas rättigheter. Bland de många forskningsprojekten finns hos alla tecken på en förändrad förståelse av vetenskap som tar vattnets dynamik och inneboende logik på allvar och även erkänner nuvarande kunskapens gränser. Vetenskapen börjar anpassa sig till vattnet.”
Den plats de flesta stannade vid, där de flesta tittade lite extra, där de flesta läste lite mer (under tiden jag var på utställningen) var kopplad till Naturens rättigheter! Aktivism och juridik i en kraftfull spiral. Människor som kräver att lagen om badförbud i Spree rivs upp och att vattenkroppen ska erkännas som ett subjekt, går hand i hand. Rättighetstexten för Spree var uppsatt på väggen. Det gick också att lyssna på den och det gick att höra hur engagemanget dunkade som ett hjärta från ljudet av vatten i rörelse. Ett inhägnat, invallat, hårdgjort Spree som nu vill ha mer liv och rörelse!
Naturens rättigheter som del i att uppnå nerväxt
Den sista dagen i Berlin planerade vi in att besöka Futurium där allt kretsar kring frågan: hur vill vi leva? I jämförelse med Humbolt Forum var detta en mer teknik- och vetenskapscentrerad utställning över massor av kvadratmeter – även denna var liksom de andra gratis.
På Futurium fick de planetära gränserna utgöra begränsningarna, och munkmodellen visionen. Hur ska egentligen minskningen av energi och material på totalen gå till? I en helt ny framtidsutställning, precis nära tågstationen i Berlin, ställdes dessa frågor. Vi behöver få ner vår användning av resurser. Detta var tydligt skrivet vid ingången till utställningen. Vi kan inte fortsätta med den stora accelerationen, av energi och material – blir vi varse i tunneln innan utställningen börjar.
Även här, i denna framtidsutställning, lyfts Naturens rättigheter konkret kopplat till rättigheterna för vildriset Manoomin, i ett samspel med olika förslag att demokratiskt leva på dramatiskt annorlunda sätt i relation till naturen mednaturen. Det var en finfin interaktiv utställning som tar frågorna på allvar och även kopplar ihop framtidsskapandet inom de planetära gränserna till motstånd och medbestämmande.
Naturens rättigheter överallt
Berlin var verkligen en överraskande framtidsriktad och otroligt kraftfull upplevelse den här gången. Utan att jag medvetet aktivt sökte efter Naturens rättigheter fanns de ändå där hela tiden. Fördjupad, förstärkt och med större förstånd rullar jag hemåt. Livet, livet som en virvelström vi inte fullt ut kan beräkna.

Swirls in Berlin
During a train trip with family and friends to Berlin, some exciting random (?) encounters happened that I was very moved by. It started during a walk in the sunshine. We had just had some lunch at Hackescher Markt from where we were going to walk to a Christmas market opposite Humboldt University. When we reached the Spree, I quickly turned around, away from the sunshine caressing my skin. I had noticed something in the corner of my eye. It was something I recognized. But it can't be, yes it can. It was the wonderful signs the River Sisters had made in Venice.
It was not the signs with Vättern and Viskan, we have those back home in Sweden, but Oder and Spree standing there shining. It was a magical feeling, fantastic actually. I was only in Berlin for three days and not for work - but Rights of Nature seems to be a magnet that draws my body towards it with unbridled force.
The Odra pays an unexpected visit
I step through the door of the Polnisches Institut Berlin to take part in the freely accessible exhibition. And see the skirts that summarize Odra's floodplain hanging from the ceiling. I move around the exhibition and am thrown back to our meetings in Venice, which created fantastic relationships. When we talked about ecofeminism and when we talked about organizing a movement. The Rights of Nature vibrated in my body again and I seemed to be looking for signs of more of this in Berlin.
Transdisciplinary water research with the Rights of Nature as a vision of the future
After I came out of the white-painted room, a little shocked and taken, we followed the low-hanging sun's rays along the walled-in river Spree to a Christmas market. It was in front of a newly built recreated building that now contained something called the Humbolt Forum. I decided to check out what exhibitions this grand building had. Then the Rights of Nature appeared to me in yet another Berlin form. Completely unexpected and completely overwhelming.
The exhibition On Water had everything from the microscopic scientific understanding of water pollution and how different plants can live together with different types of water and disused coal mines in Lusatia. The toxins from the coal mines flow into Berlin, because that's where the drinking water comes from. Everything from that to the big stories about the water cycle and how we can really understand watersheds. Or as the exhibition description puts it:
“This makes it possible to experience the diversity and complexity of water knowledge in Berlin. But not just limited to there: the exhibition also presents selected research projects that deal with solutions to water scarcity in Egypt and Kurdistan, taking local knowledge into account. In addition, a legal initiative will be shown that deals with the question of how the Spree could be given rights. Across the many research projects, there are signs of a changeing understanding of science that takes the dynamics and inherent logic of water seriously and recognizes the limits of knowledge. Science is beginning to adapt to water.”
The place where most people stopped, where most people looked a little extra, where most people read a little more (during the time I was at the exhibition) was connected to the Rights of Nature! Activism and law in a powerful spiral. People who demanded that the law banning bathing in the Spree be torn up and the body of water be recognized as a subject go hand in hand. The rights text for the Spree had been put up on the wall. You could also listen to it and you could hear how the commitment was beating like a heart from the sound of moving water. A fenced, embanked, hardened Spree that now wants more life and movement!
Rights of Nature as part of achieving degrowth
On the last day in Berlin, we visited Futurium where everything revolves around the question: how do we want to live? In comparison to the Humbolt Forum, this was a more technology and science-centered exhibition over lots of square meters - this one was also free, like the others. At Futurium, the planetary boundaries were the limitations, and the doughnut model the vision. How should the reduction of energy and materials in total be done? With a brand-new exhibition, right near the train station in Berlin, these questions were asked. We need to reduce our use of resources. It is clearly written at the entrance to the exhibition. We cannot continue with the great acceleration.
Here too, in this future exhibition, the Rights of Nature is highlighted in concrete terms linked to the rights of wild rice Manoomin, in an interaction with various proposals to democratically live in a dramatically different way in relation to nature with nature. We humans are also nature. It was a nice interactive exhibition that takes the questions seriously and connects the creation of the future within the planetary boundaries, but also to resistance and co-determination.
Rights of Nature everywhere
Berlin was a surprisingly future-oriented and incredibly powerful experience this time. Without me consciously actively searching for Rights of Nature, they were still there all the time. Deepened, strengthened and with greater understanding, I roll home. Life, life as a vortex, we cannot fully calculate.
